Most people who have transitioned to or are moving towards a raw food diet are very passionate about their health. Also counting the environment, religion and economics as additional reasons to change their eating habits those that go raw often invest a lot of time and energy into their body for a greater purpose. Deeply caring about the state of their own health as well as the world’s, raw food enthusiasts encourage certain cooking criteria. It is their belief that food should be consumed in a specific manner and by doing so a much more active and energetic lifestyle will flourish where the mind and physical structure can work at optimal levels. Part of being successful at eating raw is having the right routines and recipes.

It is essential to understand exactly what constitutes a raw food way of life and the details of formulating the proper mind set. Raw food is as much fuel as it is fight. It is the fuel for a better tomorrow. It is the fight for an existence where food is treated with respect and thought. For anyone interested in getting started in raw foods or if you simply want to brush up on what it means to eat raw then the following guidelines and tips are a great start.

-If you consume over 51% of raw food your are considered raw

-Eat fruits such as, bananas, blueberries, strawberries, apples, pears, oranges, grapes, mangos, papayas, and melons.

-Try to use variety with your vegetables. Use kale in your smoothies a couple days a week and then use romaine the other days so that you get the different plant based benefits of each vegetable. As long as it’s raw you will be gaining many benefits of the protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

-One of the most crucial components of raw is to eat organic or locally grown produce. You don’t want pesticides or other chemicals on your vegetables and fruits. With raw food you are eating without heating so there is no way to kill off the pesticides or other chemicals. Plus it is much better for the environment to eat organic. Get in the habit of going to the farmers market every week to get your produce. Once you get in the habit it will become like second nature.

-Avoid excessive amounts of dried fruit because of the calorie content but it is better to eat dried fruit than candy and cookies.

-Keep meals simple.

-Whole foods are always the best option. When you use whole foods you can sprout them and make your own super green foods. You can sprout lentils, beans, grains, etc.

-Enjoy sunshine. Try to get at least an average of 15-30 minutes of sunlight on your skin per day so that vitamin D can be absorbed into the skin.

-Be active in some form or another. Yoga is a great way to reduce stress and get fit! But it is always nice to go on a bike ride or walk; just keep moving.

These are just a few of needed steps to maintain an optimal raw food diet. Raw food purists stick to these four major groups’ fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds and simply try to eat them in most unprocessed way possible. Although sprouting seeds, grains, and beans, juicing fruit and vegetables, soaking nuts and dried fruit and blending and dehydrating (at a temperature of less than 116 degrees F) food gives raw meals a boost of expandability and creativity. Many raw food purveyors prefer simple whole fresh foods.

Some of the most extreme raw food theorists even go as far as sequential eating (starting with light foods and progressing), mono meals (only having one type of whole raw food per meal) and advanced water fasting and cleansing.

It is most important to note that there are simply nuances to eating raw and that we all must be careful when it comes to what we put in our mouth. We should be very conscience about the type of substances we consume and should consult experts and conduct diligent and educated research before making massive adjustments to the way we live. Emotional poise and stability, awareness of others, drinking filtered and pure water, getting enough rest/sleep and breathing fresh air, of course are all also part of a healthy and active raw food lifestyle.

Our bodies are dynamically sensitive and fragile systems that rely heavily on the nutrients we feed them and the training we allow them. A raw food diet is a direct attempt to positively influence our health and the world’s longevity. Every individual and situation is different so do not become frustrated if your raw food journey begins at a snail’s pace. At least you have started. Eating raw is a lifelong learning process and something that takes dedication and perseverance. There have been many reports highlighting the negatives of cooked and processed food and any step we take towards eliminating these unhealthy conduits of decline is a move in the right direction. I am sure we all would like to feel great and avoid developing chronic problems such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer and eating raw is one way to aid in these goals.

Ultimately every human has different tolerance levels and beliefs about what is right and wrong when it comes to eating. Listening to our bodies and staying within our appropriate comfort zones will encourage the most success. If you do decide that having improved skin, better digestion, increased energy, proper weight maintenance and overall better health, then eating raw just may be for you and all the great raw food recipes and data compiled here might be worth a try. The great thing about eating raw is you are not only helping yourself but others and Mother earth as well. Switching to the raw foods diet is no doubt a challenge. But overcoming our cooked food tendencies is worth it. Raw natural food is nutrient-dense and easily digested, so the body gets the fuel it needs to thrive and heal.

If you want to stop wasting energy breaking down trans fats and other harmful compounds formed in the cooking process, try any of the following tips:

1.) Add fresh fruit or veggies to each meal. If you’ve been eating mostly cooked food for a majority of your life, you can help open your mind up to whole raw foods by having a small salad with your dinner – or adding strawberries to breakfast for energy. These simple additions are small steps toward weaning away from cooked and processed food but their effects are great. Fibers and enzymes in plant-based foodstuffs promote the healthy digestion of any meal and help to cleanse the colon as they pass. With consistency, you become more accustomed to eating natural foods and it becomes easier to switch out whole cooked meals for raw ones.

2.) Drink smoothies! Freshly made smoothies are a no-brainer for any aspiring raw foodist. A balanced blend of super foods and ripe fruit satisfies even the pickiest cooked food addict but still contains an abundance of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and complex sugars to supercharge your day. Some of the most prominent raw fooders like David “Avocado” Wolfe advocate drinking smoothies daily for energy and the highly beneficial intake of predigested nutrients. Best of all, blending opens the gateway to juicing – the quickest way to flood the body with large quantities of vital plant nutrients for energy, weight loss, and strength.

Try it: (Portioning for 2 servings, place all ingredients in blender and puree well)

* 3 cups fresh, organic strawberries
* 2 bananas
* 1 cup fresh young coconut water
* 2 tablespoons of raw hulled hempseed
* 1 cup of ice cubes (optional)

3.) Try some easy-prep raw recipes. There are gourmet raw recipes that recreate the tastes and textures of common cooked meals to help ease your transition and banish your addiction to processed foods. When you’re just beginning to make the raw foods switch, plain salads, celery, and carrots just don’t seem that exciting – or appetizing. And it’s hard to gorge (as many do in the evenings) on just fruits, veggies and nuts. The more decadent raw recipes like cookies, ice-creams, pastas, and even burgers offer familiar tastes that make letting go easier and help build motivation for eating a raw diet. Though more complicated meals might require a dehydrator, most can be made ready-to-eat in minutes with only fresh organic ingredients.

Changing dietary habits means opening the mind up to new and different experiences. It’s important to keep reminding yourself of what you’ll earn through a raw diet:

(1) better sleep and increased energy,

(2) weight loss,

(3) strengthened immune system and less sick time, and

(4) enhanced mental clarity and focus

You can do this!
